We work for a lifelong commitment to animals and nature, and we want to inspire children and adults to take care of the planet we live on and preserve biodiversity. Education is conducted through curriculum-adapted educational programs, as well as through information signs, talks, and guided tours in the zoo. Information talks are led by animal keepers who provide information about our animals’ natural behavior, their situation in nature, and the threat to biodiversity.
We offer education for schools and the general public, focusing on biodiversity, sustainable development, the conservation of endangered species, and the role of zoos in this work. We target a broad audience, with the general public, primary and secondary schools, universities, and individual researchers being important components.
Educational Programs
Our formal activities are primarily aimed at groups from preschool age to university students, for whom various bookable educational programs are available. These educational programs are curriculum-adapted and highlight topics such as ethology, biodiversity, and sustainability. The educational programs are always conducted with respect for both animals and people and are based on scientifically sound knowledge. The programs should offer everyone, especially children and young people with special needs, the opportunity to experience nature and wild animals.
University-level Education
Bachelor’s and Master’s theses are conducted at Lycksele Zoo in collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).
Upper Secondary Level Education
We collaborate with several agricultural upper secondary schools in the country, where we host students from the animal care program for Workplace-Based Learning (APL). We also offer theoretical and practical instruction linked to the core content of courses within the agricultural program. Instruction in subjects such as ethology, zoo animals, feeding exotic animals, and environmental enrichment, etc., is also offered to other upper secondary schools outside the agricultural program.
Primary School Education
Formal education is offered through curriculum-adapted educational programs linked to the school system, focusing on biodiversity and the conservation of endangered species, divided into the following age groups:
Grades F-3
Grades 4-6
Grades 7-9
